The Enduring Legacy of the Roosevelt Dime (1946-Today)
The Roosevelt dime was introduced in 1946, designed by John R. Sinnock to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt following his death in 1945. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Roosevelt, with the inscriptions “LIBERTY” above and “IN GOD WE TRUST” to the left, along with the year of minting on the right. The reverse depicts a torch flanked by an olive branch and a bundle of oak leaves, symbolizing liberty and peace.
Minted in various compositions over the years, the Roosevelt dime has undergone changes in metal content, notably transitioning to a copper-nickel blend in 1965 after the removal of silver from circulating coins. While the coin remains widely collected, especially in higher grades and with full bands on the reverse, most dates are readily available, with key dates and mint marks often drawing higher premiums. The Roosevelt dime continues to be a favorite among collectors, serving as a testament to its enduring legacy and significance in American numismatics.
