Collection: Standing Liberty Quarters (1916-1930)
Redesigning Liberty: The Story of the Standing Liberty Quarter (1916-1930)
Designed by Hermon A. MacNeil, the Standing Liberty Quarter Dollar debuted in 1916 and originally featured a bare-breasted Liberty. Due to public backlash, the design was quickly revised to depict Liberty in a coat of mail, balancing artistic expression with modesty.
The reverse design was also updated in 1917, with the eagle moved to a more central position and three of the thirteen stars relocated beneath it, enhancing the overall aesthetic. In 1925, the Mint recessed the date to protect against wear, improving the coin's durability in circulation.
Collectors highly value well-struck examples, especially those with a "Full Head," indicating sharp details. Coins that also feature full rivets on the shield are particularly prized. Mintmarks, indicating the minting location, appear on the obverse to the left of the date, while the designer's initial "M" is found to the right.
While not particularly rare, certain dates and high-quality specimens can be elusive, making the Standing Liberty Quarter a cherished part of American numismatic history.
